16. PRAGUE

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic with a population of over a million. Prague is heart of Europe. The magical city of bridges, cathedrals, goltipped towers and red roof whose image has been mirrored in the surface of the Vltava river for more than ten centuries. Prague is also a modern European metropolis full of energy, music and art. It’s a place where different architectural styles. There are Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicist buildings and Art Nouveau.

History

Prague’s first inhabitants arrived during the early Stone Age. They settled down on the hills over the Vltava. In the middle of 14 th century Bohemian king Charles IV chose the city as capital of empire. He founded the New Town of Prague. The university was established.

In the 15 th century was the first defenestration of Prague when the councillors were thrown of the windows of the New Town Hall.

In the 17 th century was the Battle of the White Mountain.

In the 19 th century Prague received first railway and the first electric tram line in the city, the National Theatre was opened of the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana. The Petřín Tower was opened for the public.

In the 20 th century Nazi German armies occupied Czechoslovakia. The anti-Fascist movement in Prague culminated in the uprising. The Red Army reached Prague and occupied it. Communist regime finished of Velvet Revolution. Republic is independent state and Prague became the capital city.

Places of interest :

The old centre of Prague consists of five districts. The Old Town, the New Town, Josefov, the Little Quarter and Hradčany.

Prague castel is probably the city’s best - know sight. It is the official residence of the President of the Republic. Here are kept Coronation jewels in St. Wenceslav Chapel.This place is veiled with many legends, for example of Horymír, Libuše, Bivoj etc. It is extensive complex of castle palaces, church and the Golden Lane. In the middle of Prague castel is dominated St. Vitus Cathedral.

The Old Town Square is the centrum of old Prague. The main attractions are the Old Town Hall, the Gothic Týn Church and the Baroque St. Nicholas Church.

Charles Bridge is the oldest and the most valuable bridge was built in 1357 by the Emperor Charles IV, is it gothic bridge with 30 sculpture decors.

Other major Prague landmarks are the Vyšehrad Citadel with the Slavin cemetery and Prague Jewish Ghetto, the National Gallery, the National Museum, the National Theatre.

The Petřín Tower is 60 metres high and reminiscents of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

St. Anežka Česká Monastery is romanic and gothic monastery.
