Sylabus

1.  (1 October)On Some Distinctions between British and Czech Grammatical Theory (Libuše Dušková)The topic focuses on terminological faux amis, different approaches to identical language facts, differences due to partly different language facts and differences resulting from language-specific categories absent in the other language. The points under discussion  include, among others, the terms aspect, attribute and subject complement, different treatment of postmodification and clausal coordination, the category of definiteness, the level of phrases and the conception of the clause and the sentence.  2.-3. (8, 15 October)The Noun and the Pronoun (Jiřina Popelíková)The topic focuses on various aspects of the use of a noun phrase. Starting from the description of the internal structure of an NP, it will then move to the categories of a noun, with special attention paid to the category of definiteness and case (case as form x case as meaning, tendencies in the distribution and function of s-genitive and of-genitive). Modification within an NP. Classification and function of pronouns with respect to special functions of personal pronouns.  4. (5 November) Prominence Patterns in Spoken English (Jan Volín) Temporal organization of speech events can, under certain circumstances, generate a perceptual phenomenon called the rhythm. Although its importance in speech communication is not particularly clear from traditional phonological descriptions, recent discoveries in psychophonetic and neurophonetic laboratories indicate that the rhythm of speech is closely connected with the phonotactics of the language and influences large number of processes from speech acquisition to discourse management.7. (12 November) The Simple Sentence (Libuše Dušková)The topic includes, among others,  the sentence as a syntactic unit and a unit of the discourse level; clause structure, valency, complementation, modification; multiple clause elements (coordination); clause patterns in English and Czech; the principles of word order; the structure and discourse functions of sentence types; speech acts. 8. (19 November) Complex sentence I (Gabriela Brůhová) Topics:a.       A review of classification and syntactic functions of subordinate clausesb.      Syntactic functions of adverbial clauses (adjuncts, disjuncts, conjuncts)c.       Comment clauses 9. (26 November) Complex sentence II (Pavlína Šaldová) The lecture and the seminar focus on the systemic relations of the nonfinite and verbless ways of expression to the more explicit forms (viz. types of subordinate clauses) and on the process of nominalization, paying attention also to their stylistic and discourse properties. 10. (3 December)  English Prepositions (Aleš Klégr)The lecture will present description of English prepositions from two perspectives:(a) Definition, features, classification and use of English prepositions(b) Contrastive view of English vs Czech prepositions in textThe seminar will include two students’ presentations illustrating the current research on English prepositions and exercises practicing and testing the knowledge of prepositions. 11.
