The first part of the course presents basic objectives and approaches to soil classification, introduces principal world soil classification systems and provides characteristics of major soil groups. The second part of the course describes conventional and up-to date approaches to soil mapping, soil inventories and monitoring. Attention is paid to the soil cover structure and heterogeneity. The course is focused also on soil survey interpretations for land productivity and environmental assessment. Principles of the structure of soil GIS and especially the Czech PUGIS are explained.
