Wetlands are transitional ecosystems between typical terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Wetlands environment, characterized mainly by specific hydrologic regimes, exhibits two important features; relatively large water level fluctuations and generally hypoxic but often anoxic conditions in both the soil profile and the water column. The organisms inhabiting wetlands are adapted to these conditions in different ways anatomically, morphologically and physiologically. Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems on the Earth and many plant and animal species are specifically bound to this environment.
