Content of lectures:1. Introduction: Biogeographic regions in the tropics; Physical settings in the tropics and consequences for insects; Selection pressures faced by tropical insects; Early entomologists in the tropics.2. A review of insect taxa endemic to or particularly well represented in the tropics; Diversity of insect life histories and feeding guilds in the tropics.3. Macroecology of tropical insects: abundance, body size, diversity, temporal and spatial distributions (lectured by YB); reverse latitudinal gradients in species richness (lectured by Jan Hrcek).4. Insect use of tropical habitats: rainforests, savannas and plantations; Insect use of extreme habitats in the tropics (caves, deserts, forest canopy, etc.).5. Insect herbivores in the tropics: global ecology.6. Forest processes maintained by tropical insects: pollination and seed predation / dispersal.7. Termites in the tropics.8. Medical entomology in the tropics.9. Litter and arboreal ants in the tropics; Ants & plants in the tropics.10. Saproxylophagous insects in tropical forests (lectured by Lukas Cizek).11.
