Cíl

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to identify the major cultural traditions of the aboriginal inhabitants of North America. They will be be able to explain the relationship between the environment of specific regions and the cultural manifestations associated with that region. They will be able to recognize material culture associated with specific regions and explain the relationship between material and non-material culture in pre-Columbian North America.

Osnova

Kurz nabízí přehled historie, kultury, způsobu života, sociální organizace a světových názorů původních obyvatel Kanady a Spojených států. Vychází přitom z geografického hlediska a zkoumá, jak se kultury původních obyvatel přizpůsobovaly podmínkám každé z devíti zeměpisných oblastí, do nichž je Severní Amerika pro tento kurz rozdělena. Pro každou z těchto oblastí bude výběr textů zaměřených na jednu skupinu sloužit jako model pro ostatní skupiny z téže oblasti. Kurz bude doprovázen rozsáhlou četbou, která bude zahrnovat jak textyetnografické, etno-historické a historické, tak i tradiční folkórní tvorbu původních obyvetal Ameriky.
