Cíl
Much of liberal (and even radical) feminism takes the Western female experience as universal. This course argues that subjugation relating to the colonial experience, particularly racialized experience, is the motor of gendered thinking; challenging the assumption that gender oppression is the primary force of patriarchy. In fact, what we today distinguish as “gender” and “race” arose side by side in the management of colonial Empires. This course will explore the ways in gender has been shaped in tandem with racial thought by the historical forces of colonialism in case studies from Indonesia, Africa, and Latin America.
