This course aims to explore ways of the role of self-expression in identity construction through media activities with a special interest on Internet and video games.A trans-disciplinary approach will be adopted and many backgrounds are welcomed in this course. The main objective is to understand the function of pastime activities with media in identity construction process. A reflexive approach will shape activities done in seminars.

The Identity and Play Activity1. Construction of Identity and SocializationIn this class, we will sum up knowledge about construction of the identity in sociological research (interactionism tradition). By emphasizing on the changes in recent times, we aim to present stakes of social construction nowadays.Readings: Cooley, C. H. (1902). “Society and Individual”, in Human nature and the social order. Playing and Self expressionThis session is concentrated on playing and gaming as a channel to test identities and become aware of social roles. We will discuss how a type of toys impact on gender identities.Reading: Flanagan, M. (2009). “Introduction to Critical Play”, in Critical Play. Cambridge. MIT Press (2nd ed), pp. 1-16Technologies and Self3&4 Video Gaming and SocializationEnvisioning video games as nowadays toys leads us to study video gaming in socialization process. We will devote two sessions to this topic. Blogging and journalingIn this session, we will have a look on how writing has been allowed more intensely with Internet spread and improvement. Facebooking and YoutubingThis session will close our semester by extending to Internet activities. Taking Facebook and Youtube as examples of what technologies provide for occasions of self-expression, we will enquiry how using them support identity construction.
