This course will familiarize you with the often contentious history of communication theory concerning media effects. At issue among scholars working within different research traditions are core disagreements about what should be studied (institutions, texts, audiences, technologies), how it should be studied, and even what constitutes an “effect.” Course readings and lectures stress an understanding of these various research traditions by focusing on the social, political, and historical contexts surrounding them, the research models and methods employed, and the findings and conclusions reached.Course assignments and exams will assess your understanding of course readings as well as your abilityto apply mass media theory to new media texts. The specific learning goals this course aims to achieve are:1. Understand the history of research into media effects.2. Understand the relationship between media technologies, texts, and audiences.3. Become a knowledgeable and critical consumer of media texts.4. Conduct independent research.5. Formulate a well-written, analytical essay.Note: Students are expected to attend and participate in class each week. If for any reason you are unableto attend a class session, please notify the instructor in advance. More than two absences during the semester will negatively affect your final grade for the course.
