Student má přehled o nejvýznamnějších autorech moderní americké literatury 20. století a orientuje se v současné literatuře Spojených států. Umí charakterizovat jednotlivé literární směry, které zasáhly do vývoje moderní americké literatury. Dokáže interpretovat vybraná literární díla a zařadit je do amerického i světového literárního kontextu. Upevňuje schopnost analytického i syntetického myšlení, a to jak v ústním, tak i písemném projevu. Je schopen literárněkritického uvažování o literatuře. Rozvíjí schopnost estetického vnímání uměleckého textu.
