Some cross-cultural examples of linguistic expressions related to emotionsSeminars: Paul WilsonThe seminars, which are based on the principles of cognitive linguistics, focus on the structure of emotion concepts and how these differ across cultures.Seminar 1: Structure of Emotion ConceptsThe seminar will first provide students with a grounding in the structure of everyday concepts such as modes of transport and items of food. Students will then gain an understanding that emotion concepts are based on the same principles of these everyday concepts. The focus of attention will then turn to how emotional experiences are created, with emphasis being placed on the role of language. Following this, the detailed structure of emotion concepts will then be discussed, including the superordinate, basic and subordinate levels, as well as the prototypical structure of different cognitive models of emotions.Seminar 2: Cross-Cultural Differences in Emotion ConceptsIn the first part of the seminar students will be provided with an understanding of how the nature of emotions concepts makes them susceptible to cultural influences. Then some of the major theories regarding cultural differences will be introduced (e.g., individualism vs. collectivism (Hofstede, 1980)). The students will then be provided with data showing differences between Polish and British English emotions, and the following discussions will focus on the possible reasons underlying these cross-cultural differences. The students will then be asked to discuss the possible similarities and differences in emotion concepts between the Czech language and Polish and British English.
