Students gain the ability to follow news and public events in America and the English-speaking world with in-depth understanding. They learn to assess the national cultures in question as ongoing, dynamic negotiations among groups and subcultures, as arguments over both principles and present conditions, and as continuing struggles to lay claim to concepts like justice, truth, realism, and "common sense." They also learn methods for applying such insights in analyzing literature, art, music and other cultural products.
