Reaction of the welfare state to the crisis- reaction to the crisis: welfare mix, quasi-market, convergence of the welfare state regimes etc.- current trends and problems in social policy5. The objective of the course is to present basic analysis of the historical context affecting the formation of modern social policy, which should lead to the understanding of the current trends in the area of social policy and the welfare state. The course is designed to provide knowledge of the dependence of social policy measures on social and economic conditions. The understanding of the current trends in the area of social policy should be reached through the knowledge of its history, current situation and the evolution trends of social policy in present-day Europe. Especially in focus on central European problems in the field of welfare.

Written essay on a topic from the list below. 1250 2500 words. The introduction must always include the aim of the essay, the application and symbolic objective and a brief outline (succession of sub-topics) and a commentary on their logical arrangement. The text is based on printed sources, electronic sources. References to the sources are included in the text itself. The lecturer assesses students' effort to present context and possible causes and consequences of the analysed phenomena instead of a mere description of their current state.The list of topics for the essay:a) Social policy (the welfare state) comparison of different countries and periods:- Classification of a selected area of social policy according to one of the welfare state typologies (Titmusse's, Esping-Andersen's) plus justification of the employed criteria and indicators.- The welfare states of modern Europe in international comparison (comparison of a selected area of social policy in selected countries) plus justification of the employed criteria and indicators.b) The main issues of modernization of the contemporary european welfare state - The main purpose of a selected element of social policy (adjustment of benefits, subsistence wage). How is the selected element justified? Is it necessary? What would be the consequences of its reduction/expansion and what would be affected by it? c) The main subjects of professional discussion in the area of current modernization of the welfare state:- Gender issues of the welfare state (e.g. equal opportunities of men and women in access to work, rewards, child care). The sense of feminist ideology for ensuring welfare of the society. - Possible future consequences of the individualisation, marketization, and managerization of the social sphere. E.g. the assets and drawbacks of quasi-market.- What are the changes of the relations of state, market and the civil society as the core institutions of the so-called welfare triangle?
