TEACHING METHODS:The lectures and seminars will not be strictly separated. Instead, they will be combined in order to give students opportunities to actively participate.COURSE REQUIREMENTS:Active and competent class participation Students are expected to attend all classes. They are also expected to be prepared for class and actively participate in class discussions. Each student is required to read the assigned literature before coming to class and to prepare a short summary of the texts, including questions and comments about the issues that she/he found interesting, controversial, or provoking. Paper (Essay)Students are asked to write a short paper (essay) on an issue that will be discussed with a lecturer, for possible topics see below.The essay should be 2 000 ? 2400 words long and it should analyze the chosen topic from the complex perspective. All students are required to e-mail an electronic copy of their paper to the lecturer?s e-mail address by the deadline.You can use databases accessible from UHK network. You can find heplful library at the secretary of our department.Possible topics of essay:1. What are the prospects for consolidation and maintenance of democracy in Latin America? Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Why? 2. Analyze concept of neopopulism. What are its defining characteristics? You can choose one case study or analysis can be done in comparative perspectives. 3. ?From exclusion to inclusion?? Describe and analyze process of indigenous political and social participation. You can choose one case study or analysis can be done in comparative perspectives. Written final examThe questions put on test will concern the issues that are covered in the lectures and required literature.

Final grade will be assigned based on:? Active and competent class participation: maximum of 30 points;? Paper: maximum of 20 points;? Written final exam: maximum of 50 points.The grading standard will be as follows:A (=1): 88-100 pointsB (=2): 75-87 pointsC (=3): 65-74 pointsF (=Failed, no exam/Credit Course Unit earned): 0-64 pointsImportant Note: You can not pass the course unless you complete all of the assignments listed above.
