Upon successful completion of the course the students will:understand the relationship between economics and psychology and be able to assess the role of rationality in the scientific attempts to explain human behaviorgain a better understanding of basic economic concepts that is necessary for the final state exam ("SVIP")be able to orient themselves in economic texts and to evaluate them critically

The course will concentrate on following topics:What kind of science is economics?What is science? What is the main distinction between natural and social sciences (if there is any)? In what sense is the methodological approach of economics specific? Is economics an empirical science?Relation of economics to psychologyDoes economics need psychology? What is the aim of economic/psychological explanation? Who is homo economicus? Is he/she selfish? What do we understand under "preferences" and "utility"?What is rationality? Rationality versus irrationalityWhat is the common sense definition of rationality? How does social science treat rationality? Why is rationality so important? Is it even possible to act irrationaly?The role of rationality in the scientific account of human behaviorThe problem of observer. The central position of the notion of rationality in accounting for human action. Is there any significant difference between psychology and economics in their approach to rationality? What are the pitfalls of the search for rational explanation?Rational choice theory (RCT) and revealed preference theoryWhat is the standard model of behavior in economics?
