Cíl

Cílem kurzu je zmapovat vývoj kolonizačních praktik od vrcholného středověku k rané kolonizaci Nového světa Španěly a Portugalci. Kurz se zaměří na kolonizační procesy v různých regionech, na ekonomické, sociální a náboženské aspekty a na vznik konceptu "druhého" (Slované, černoši, Indiáni). Předmětem pozornosti budou i misionářské aktivity různých řádů, zejména františkánů a jezuitů v Novém světě. Předmětem diskusí bude studium pramenů a moderních komentářů. Přednášky zahrnou vizuální materiál, mapy a filmy. Ústní zkouška.

Reconquista and its transfer to the North Africa. Inquisition.       Sources and needs for colonization8.      Portuguese crown and first expedition: Morocco (Ceuta), Madeira and other islands.             Looking for the new ways to India. Early Portuguese forts and outposts.       India and eastern Asia9.       New World: Contrast of Spanish and Portuguese colonizing practices. Forming the colony       administration and new social order10.    The "Others": Jews and new Christians. Indigenous population of Americas - noble         barbarians or ruthless savages. Slavery (black and Indian)11.    Missionaries and religious conversion: Missionary practices of the religious orders -       converting the savage. Franciscan order in Mexico and Brazil. Požadavky

Evaluation consists of written test with 2 essay topics from the list below. Every test will consist of one topic from the first half of the module and one from the other (Spanish and Portuguese colonization).Topics:Summarize differences between medieval colonization and modern colonialismWhat were the reasons of Venice´s dominance in the eastern Mediterranean and what event did its rise to power cause?Summarize impulses and types of medieval colonizationCreating the maritime empire: Background, motivations and resources of Portugal/Spain (choose one) to transform into colonizing power.The "other": Choose either Jewish (New Christian)/Muslim/Indigenous colonized population, describe their status in the major, Christian society and their persecution/struggle for recognition (e.g. Bartolomeo de Las Casas and his protection of indigenous peoples).Mission and missionaries: Missionary perspectives of the "Indian", missionary strategies and forms of the mission (e.g. Jesuit reductions). Test dates (room 6020, 15:00):- 18/5- 1/6- 16/6
