Sylabus

Students are distributed into 4 groups according to the file "seminars_dates," each student is assigned three specific dates for seminars to attend. For each seminar please prepare a short (5 minutes) but concrete talk. Content of the seminar:seminar - defense of the thesis proposal with hypotheses. What is your contribution to the research literature? What have you done on the thesis since June?seminar - detailed description of the methodology you plan to use to test your hypotheses. What have you done since the last seminar?seminar - defense of the first part of your thesis. What have you done since the last seminar? What is the detailed plan for the next semester? You must convince us that you are capable of writing a good thesis by mid-May/beg-Jan. Send the first draft of your thesis in advance.

Požadavky

Check regularly "yymmdd_jem001" file (log-in to see the file), where your fulfilled requirements are noted (including students of JEM169 and JMMZ019). To finish the course you must fulfill the following minimum requirements.1. Attendance: You must attend all three seminars.You must come to all 3 seminars. If you study abroad for the entire semester, you are free from this requirement, but you still have to send us details on your progress (several paragraphs; please be concrete) on the day of the seminar. The exact dates of your seminar will be specified in the file "seminars_dates" (log-in to see the file). If you cannot attend your seminars at specified date, you can switch with your colleague but need to inform us in advance.2. Proposal: You must send us your thesis proposal (by email before the first seminar and, when approved after the first seminar, in hardcopy with your's and your supervisor's signature).You must send it by email before the first seminar (that is, you should find your topic and your supervisor before the first seminar). We may ask you to make some adjustments; in that case, always send us also the new version. Once your proposal is approved at the seminar, print it, get your supervisor's signature, and deliver the signed proposal to Tomas Havranek's box at the IES (box #2). If you currently study abroad, you still have to send proposal by email and hand in signed final version (ask your supervisor to deliver the signed proposal; scanned version is acceptable for students abroad as well). We should have your signed proposal before the third seminar at the latest.3. First Part: You must send us the first part of your thesis by the end of December for winter semester or end of June for summer semester (at least 15 pages of solid text).You must send us at least 15 standard pages (27ths. characters including spaces, excluding the abstract, cover pages, references, proposal, and appendices) showing that you are capable of producing an academic text. Everything you send us is automatically checked for plagiarism. This first part must be approved by your supervisor (no official approval is required) and cannot be sent later than by the fixed deadline of December 31 or June 30. Please include zuzana.havrankova.fsvcuni@analysis.urkund.com in carbon copy of your email addressed to all 3 teachers.Rules of communication. Unless you study abroad, you are required to send 2 documents to pass the course: the thesis proposal and the first part of the thesis. A few days after the deadlines an xls file will be published on this webpage to indicate students that passed the requirement.You are eligible for credits only if you fulfill all the course requirements and convince us that you are capable of writing a good thesis by mid-May/beg-Jan. Always check for official deadlines in current academic year on FSV web.Please, take your time and go through a few good theses which you can find on the website. Most of them include thesis proposals---this is the best inspiration for you and it will answer a lot of your questions. Read the documents "Academic Writing" and "Handbook" above. Your thesis will be evaluated according to its quality, not number of pages, but you have to fulfill the minimum requirements of the Faculty (50 standard pages from the Introduction to the Conclusion for theses written in English). If you think about writing your thesis in LaTeX, there is a template created specifically for the IES (attached above). Empirically there is a significant correlation between the usage of LaTeX and the final grade.
