Description:Latin America - the continent which about 600 million people call home -  is after centuries of abandonment and exploitation on the rise. The majority of the Latin American countries have moved away from brutal dictatorships and war conflicts and are rapidly growing in many areas. Number of countries in the region are starting to play important role in the world economy, diplomacy etc. Any journalist wanting to cover world affairs should have a basic knowledge about the realities of this complex continent.Course Objectives:The objective of this course is introduce students to basic historical realities of Latin American countries and to introduce media landscape of these countries. After completion of this course students will be able to better understand current developments in Latin America.Organization:The class consists of theoretical lectures. Discussions based on assigned readings are integral part of these lectures. Each student will present a mini-lecture on a given topic. Students are asked to actively follow events in the region during the semester and come prepared with at least 2 news pieces from two countries in the region. At the beginning of each class current events in the region are discussed.Prerequisites:Due to lack of resources in Czech, working knowledge of English language is essential.Course Topics:Topics that will be covered include:Historical overview of each countryOverview of media landscape in each countryThe problem of violence against journalists in the hemisphere, especially in cases related to organized crime, drug trafficking and political motivated crimesThe impact of the Internet and other digital media on journalism and freedom of expression in the regionMedia monopolies and concentration of media ownership Lectures:Introduction to Media in Americas (+USA and Canada and their influence on the region)Colombia (+Gran Colombia and Simon Bolivar)EcuadorPeru + BoliviaChile  (+O'Higgins)Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay (+San Martin)Brazil (+ media monopolies)Venezuela (+Guayana, Surinam)Cuba (+Social Networks)Central America I (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua)Central America II (Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador)Mexico (+violence against journalists)Caribbean (Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico)GradingLecture participation 2 points each - total  24 (out of 100)Presentation on a country: 16  points eachMid-term test: 20 pointsFinal essay: 40 pointsMinimum points to pass: 70 Text and required supplies:Due to general unavailability of texts required for this class will be provided in a form of photocopies.
