Cíl

The course aims to provide an advanced understanding of institutional factors of EU membership and of the political system and decision-making processes of the EU itself. The students should gain broad understanding of these issues by familiarising themselves with current institutional design and by learning to apply theoretical concepts on specific questions and cases. The students should also learn to search for specific documents in European institutions databases.

Požadavky

Master course taught as a seminar for the obligatory course EU - vývoj společenství (JPM050). It is one of the seminars to which students who participate in the obligatory course JPM050 must enrol (they cannot pass the obligatory course without passing one of the seminars).The course can also be chosen as an elective course by any other students, including Erasmus and exchange students. Credit requirementsregular attendanceonly 2 absences for valid reasons per semester are allowed (one being at the introductory session)absence from the seminar must be reported to the lecturer via e-mail no later than the deadline for submission of memosa student has to make up for the absence by handing in an additional written assignementwritten memos and activity in the classthe memos must address the questions raised in the assignment on the basis of assigned literature (and possibly other relevant sources), be of 400-600 words length, submitted to the lecturer by 6 p.m. on the day before the seminar; the students must submitt memos for all the seminars, except for the introductory seminar and the seminar they present atactive participation in the class (discussion) is required20 % of the final creditpresentationeach student must present an assigned topic and lead the discussion among fellow students once a semester. The presentation should be based on readings for the given seminar and additional readings and sources, and should be argumentative and not just summarising the readings. The student should suggest a points of discussion following the presentation and lead the discussion30 % of the final creditfinal paperfinal paper, to be submitted no later than May 29, 20154000 words (tolerance: 10 %)50 % of the final creditAll readings and assignments are available in electronic versions from library catalogue or journal databases available via library or in SIS as downloadable files for students enrolled in the course no later than three weeks before the seminar.Final paper topics are to be selected by the students themselves but must be discussed and pre-approved by the lecturer by April 22.The grading scale is as follows:1 - excellent: 100-88 points2 - very good: 87-73 points3 - good: 72-60 points4 - fail - 59 or less
