Its focus is on political, ethical and normative distinctions and interactions between armed forces (AF) and their parent society. The course is structured into four blocks:A) Introduction into the academic debates on CMR and historical development of relations and interactions between the military and its parent societyB) CMR from the political science perspective: civilian control of armed forces, military interventions into politics, militarismC) Military organization from the sociological perspective: conscription/AVF, military institutions, culture and traditions,D) ‘Postmodern’ armed forces: new roles of AF, privatization of military functions, international military cooperation and integrationEach block consists of two lectures and one seminar. Students are expected to actively participate in the lectures. It is, therefore, essential that students do their required reading before each lecture (the required reading will be available in ‘moodle’ at least a week in advance). A quiz/test based on the reading will be prepared in ‘moodle’ before each lecture to encourage and award this advanced preparation. MoodleThe e-learning platform ‘moodle’ is an essential part of this course. Every participating student is expected to enrol into the moodle-page of this course (http://dl1.cuni.cz/course/view.php?id=3462) and regularly check its content. Moodle will provide a platform for 1) communication between the teacher and students, 2) distribution of the required reading, 3) examination.
