Course title: PUBLIC POLICYCourse number: JSM518, Fall Semester 2015/16Course website: http://www.martinpotucek.cz (slot Courses/Public Policy)Volume of instruction: 2/1Number of credits: 9Time and place: Mondays, 3:30-6:20 pm, rooms 2080 (lectures), 2080, 2083, 3019(seminars)Course leader: Prof. Martin Potůček, PhD. http://www.martinpotucek.czConsultations to be booked electronically at http://terms.fsv.cuni.czGoals of instruction:The course aims to introduce students to the study of public policy as a discipline, withina broader context of the development of contemporary societies; to exemplify public policy’spractical application and the ways public policy as a scientific discipline attempts toapprehend social problems and devise solutions thereof (with special attention paid topension reforms); to do so by defining the key terms, concepts and methods of public policy;and to engage students in critical thinking and studying, systematic work with scholarlyliterature, writing scholarly texts and actively participating in seminars.Registration prerequisites:This course is offered exclusively to:a. students of masters programmes Veřejná a sociální politika (full-time students only),Public and Social Policy, and International Economic and Political Studies.b. students of doctoral programmes Veřejná a sociální politika and Public and SocialPolicy.Note: The twin course Theory of Public Policy is available for students of other full-timemasters or doctoral study programmes at Charles University, and for international visitingstudents studying masters and doctoral programmes at their home universities.Conditions for passing:Students shall be admitted to the written examination for this course (in English, Czech orSlovak) if they have been graded for the seminar and if they have elaborated and submitted afinal written assignment (in English, Czech or Slovak) on an agreed topic. The deadline for submission of answers to questions for lectures 1 to 4 isOctober 19th, for the rest in the day of the respective lecture. Answers can be submitted inwritten to the course leader in the day of the particular lecture, or e-mailed topplectureview@gmail.com. Each answer (up to 2 000 characters spaces included) will beevaluated by 0 to 2 points.Table 2: Final grading shall be based on the following key(provided students earned minimum points in particular items - consult Table 1):Final point score Grade80 or more Excellent (výborně)65-79 Very Good (velmi dobře)50-64 Good (dobře)49 or less Fail (neprospěl/a)N.
