They will be analyzed in the context of the European Union. The attention will be also put on emerging welfare state regimes in the Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the Czech Republic. The course will be organised in the form of lectures and seminars where students will actively work with recommended literature. They will present short overview of the studying materials and also offer a critical evaluation of it in the context of actual social policy problems in the Czech Republic (or their home countries).Hlavní cíle kurzu/ Main Objectives: This course is designed to help students acquire knowledge about most challenging problems facing European welfare states nowadays. After completion of this course, students should be able to:-          Know theoretical concept of welfare state (its history, functions, threats).-          Know how welfare states in Europe cope with the most recent challenges of the dynamics of (post)industrial society.-          Understand what are the most important social problems and the policy implications in the present European states.-          Understand the alternative options in social policy, analyze the links between the social, economic and political context, policy solutions, and impacts of the policies accepted.-          Understand the impact of European integration on modern social policy.-          Know pros and cons social policy reform in the Czech Republic in the process of social policy transformation in the region of central and Eastern Europe. Conditions of enrollment: The course is compulsory for students of Master’s degree programs of Public and Social Policy and some Doctoral students of Public and Social Policy. Students of other programs could register and participate in the course after approval by the course leaders. Study obligations - Lectures: Students are required to fulfill seminar tasks, submit a final paper (either in English or in Czech/Slovak), and pass written examination (either in English or in Czech/Slovak). The topic of the final paper (and its specification*) could be chosen by each student during the course (the deadline is 20.04.2015). In the case of topic´s approval by the course leaders students will be given 5 bonus points.*Specify research aims, research questions and preliminary structure of the final paper with special stress put on theoretical background of the study.Study obligations - Seminars:The attendance of the seminars (5) is compulsory (one absence is acceptable). Students will be divided to several (5) groups who are expected to fulfill their tasks connected with topics of individual seminars.
