Lectures 1. SPORTS MEDICINE-INTRODUCTORY LESSON: Organisation of the sports medicine lessons.PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS. Cardiovascular disease and physical activity /understanding the disease process, determining individual risk, prevention trough physical activity, risk of heart attack and death during exercise/. Prescription of excercise for health and fitness /the exercise prescription, monitoring exercise intensity, exercise and rehabilitation of poeple with diseases/. (Pudil 2)2. CLINICAL PEARLS IN SPORTS MEDICINE: Athlete´_s heart. Palpitations in athletes. Sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Use of prescribed drugs in athletes.Bronhial hyperreactivity and airway inflammation in trained athletes. The impact of changes in the International Olympic Committee medical commission criteria for asthma. (Pudil 2)3. ESSENTIALS OF MOVEMENT. Muscular control of  movement (the structure and function of skeletal muscle,  skeletal muscle and exercise). Neurologiacal control of  movement (the structure and function of the nervous system  in relation to the motor response). Stretching activities. (Kubová 2)4. CARDIORESPIRATORY FUNCTION AND PERFORMANCE.  Cardiovascular control during exercise (structure and  function of the cardiovascular system, cardiovascular  response to exercise). Respiratory regulation during  exercise (pulmonary ventilation, diffusion, transport of  oxygen and carbon dioxide, gas exchange at the muscle, the  regulation of pulmonary ventilation, ventilation and  energy metabolism, respiratory limitations to performance,  respiratory regulation of acid-base balance). (Kubová 2)5. CARDIORESPIRATORY ADAPTATIONS TO TRAINING. Evaluating  endurance capacity, cardiovascular, respiratory and  metabolic adaptations to training, long-term improvement  in endurance, factors affecting the response to aerobic  training. (Kubová 2)6. OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE IN SPORT. Quantifying sports  training (excessive training, overtraining, tapering for  peak performance, detraining, retraining). Ergogenic aids  and performance (pharmacological, hormonal and  physiological agents). Nutrition and nutritional  ergogenics (the six nutrient classes, water and  electrolyte balance, the athlete°s diet, gastrointestinal  function during exercise, designing sports drinks). (Kubová 2)Exercises1st practical session:  Instruction No 1 (Marek Ballon, MD.):Records and evaluation of ECG exercise, findings  typical of IHD, sensitivity and specificity of the  examination with regard to coronarography.  24 hour ECG monitoring - Holter  monitoring. Blood pressure measurement by Tonoport.Examination of pulmonary functions.: Spirometry, the flow volume curve, body plethysmography, diffusing pulmonary capacity, blood gases, bronchomotor tests.Instruction No 2 (Rudolf Praus, M.D., PhD.):The ultrasound of the heart. Transthoracal and transesophageal ultrasonography of the  heart, application in IHD and valvular heart disease. Evaluation of  LV function (TTE - stress Transthoracal Echocardiography,  TEE - stress Trans Esophageal Echocardiography, and  CE - Contrast Echocardiography).    2nd practical session:  Students will be divided into three sub groups. In those groups they will visit specialized centers at the Dept. of Noninvasive Cardiology and Angiology (head-Rudolf Praus, MD), and Dept. of Sports Medicine to observe the real life physical examination in practice. To be exposed to more practical methods the groups will rotate the working stations.Lecturers: Praus MD., Ballon MD, Vavera MD, Assoc. Prof. Barták and Vondruška MD. 3rd practical session:Physical examination, regeneration and rehabilitation of the musculosskeletal system in athletes (Tomáš Vrbica, MD.)Seminars: Can nutrition improve athletic performance? Outcomes in athletes with marked ECG repolarisation abnormalities. Does training adversely affect long term health? Inability and contraindications of sports activity. Cardiovascular events during world soccer cup. Doping in sports. News in high-altitude medicine. Lecturers: Marek Ballon MD, Assoc. Prof. Barták, MD., PhD. 4th  practical session: April 17 (at 8a.m., FH - room EC3): Preventive examination of a sportsman. History, determination of body development, differences in physical  examination, measurement of maximal oxygen consumption after exercise on a treadmill (use of computers for  calculations), evaluation of the measured laboratory  results, conclusions of examination.Measurement of the value of limiting aerobic work capacity of patients after exercise on a bicycle ergometer  and determination of percentage of the appropriate oxygen consumption value. Use of those results for experts' calculation purposes. Spiroegometric examination in competitive athletes.Lecturers: Miroslav Brtko, MD., PhD., Assoc. Prof. Barták.
