An indicative overview of the course:1. a paragraph - academic vocabulary, components of academic style (examples of poor style, colloquial language - words to be avoided: kids, don´t, lots of, big, get better, you know…) writing a definition, generalisations (overall, on the whole), paraphrasing - elements and techniques noun clauses: that-clauses (+ reported speech, subjunctive)2. letters and e-mails - prepositions and prepositional phrases (within, for purposes of, throughout,…) giving examples (a classic/well-known/notable example …., such as, illustrated by,…) describing trends (a slight increase/decrease/fall/ growth…, the number is expected/likely to grow/fall…) noun clauses: if/whether clauses + question clauses3. a covering letter, a cv punctuation nouns - countability comparison and contrast (major differences between, comparable to, whereas, while, it contrasts with, it differs from, by contrast, similarly, likewise, …) adverb clauses: time + place4. a summary - classifying and listing (divided into, classified in terms of, grouped in, firstly, secondly,…) coherence (the former/the latter…) conjunctions, linking words and phrases (furthermore, in addition, moreover, on the other hand,…) adverb clauses: distance, frequency, manner5. a brief report - opening sentences and conclusions quantifiers (many, quite a few, numerous)+ little research / few researchers cause and effect (caused, led to, resulted in,…because of, due to,…since, as,…) adverb clauses: reason + result + purpose6. a review - signalling transition (as regards, as far as…, as discussed above, as explained earlier,…returning briefly to the subject of…) argument and discussion being critical (limitations, weaknesses, disadvantages, drawbacks, Smith fails to fully define…) adverb clauses: contrast + conditional clauses7. a popular (non-scholarly) article / essay caution (usually, tends to, suggests, may, rather,…) + limitations (however, the findings do not imply…, we cannot be certain) plagiarism, references, quotations verbs + prepositions (it refers to, it centers on…) adjective clauses: relative pronouns and adverbs I8. a scholarly article - problems and solutions, Latin phrases: i.e., ibid. + abbreviations synonyms adjective clauses: relative pronouns and adverbs II9. a research paper - numbers, describing quantities (the proportion, nearly half of, just over 5%, the average, estimates range from…to…,) linking phrases (in order to establish…, prior to collecting…, in the light of these findings…) tables (as shown in…, see table 3,…) participial phrases
