Students14 from University of Massachusetts, Lowell10 from Charles University,PragueThis is an intensive interdisciplinary summer course for social science students interested in current immigration issues in the United States and Europe. The first two weeks of the program will consist of intensive in-class discussions, lectures, viewing of documentaries, etc. This is a highly interactive course and students will need to do readings outside of class on daily basis in order to be able to participate in in-class discussions. Readings will be provided to students online. Topics will include journeys of migrants from their home countries to their destinations; remittances and their impact on sending communities; transnational nature of modern migration; issues of legality and deportations; acculturation; discrimination, etc. The American students will be conducting a research project as part of this course. Charles University students can choose to do this component. Most time spend on the research part will take place in the third week of the course and subsequent writing of the research paper will take place later in the summer. All students will be required to write several short reflective papers during the first two weeks of the course. In addition, their grade will be based on their contribution to class discussions. There will be no oral exam in the end of the course. Classes will generally meet 9:00 am - 1:00 pm first two weeks with possible exception to accommodate a guest speaker or a field trip. There will be breaks during the long morning.All classes will be conducted in English.
