The basic course of Taiwanese dialect introduces the phonetic system of Taiwanese, transcriptions, and basic conversational topics (introduce yourself, shopping, in the city etc.)The course focuses on practical language skills. Students will acquire knowledge of the phonetic system, lexical system as well as basic grammar. The course points out interesting aspects of the dialect and its comparison to standard Chinese.

Students will master the pronunciation of Taiwanese, basic lexical items as well as basic grammar. Students will be able to communicate in basic life situations. The course provides basic prerequisites for the advanced course Taiwanese 2.
