This course provides a general introduction to the relations among language, cultures and society with special emphasis on Mandarin. Students will explore different aspects of language usage such as idioms, homonyms, euphemisms and metaphors. Students have to participate in analysis and discussion of specific expressions and then try to do their own research based on their knowledge acquired in class.1. Four-character idioms (Chenyu)2. Locutions3. Adages (slangs and proverbs)4. Homonyms and Words with a double meaning5. Taboos and Euphemisms6. Metaphors (colors, tastes, animals, "face", etc.)7. Polite expressions8. Jargons9.
