What are the many languages of Jewish American literature? What is the nature of the relationship between these languages? What role does Hebrew (and the mystical dimension of the Hebrew alphabet) play in Jewish American writing?In order to answer these questions (and more) this course will examine works of Jewish American literature from the mid-nineteenth century to the present within the context of literary theories (such as postmodernism, post-colonialism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis), and will encompass short stories, novels, novellas, poems, autobiographies, essays and film. We will be focusing on various aspects of the problematics of identity (language, ethnicity, race, religion) in relation to the experience of immigration, (anti-) assimilation, multilingualism and multiculturalism, home and exile, memory and textuality, intertextuality, and, if time allows, representation of the Holocaust and the state of Israel in the imagination of Jewish American authors. Among the authors whose works we will be reading are Abraham Cahan, Mary Antin, Delmore Schwartz, Isaac Rosenfeld, Charles Reznikoff, Henry Roth, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Grace Paley, Rebecca Goldstein, Cynthia Ozick, Philip Roth.A detailed reading list and syllabus will be provided after signing upCopies of stories and essays will be available for photocopying. Films will be available at the library
Požadavky
Students should have read the primary and secondary sources assigned for each class (prior to class) and will be expected to attend regularly, participate in class discussion and submit a short paper (10 pages) at the end of the term/shortly after.
