Obsah

Metoda lingvistického výzkumu i teoretický lingvistický rámec je pro každý semestr, v němž se kurz otevírá, vždy konkretizován. V LS 2014 se vzhledem k vystoupení Noama Chomského na konferenci OLINCO kurz zaměří na formální lingvistiku a metody používané v jejím rámci: In any discipline that pretends to scientific status, there is a methodology for conducting experiments that 'count.' Formal grammar is concerned with what combinations of items ('morphemes') are well-formed and which are not. Since the 1950s, most practicioners have conceded that formal grammar must involve native speakers' judgments of well-formedness; the inventor of this general method is Noam Chomsky. Grammarians didn't use these before, and since he introduced them, none can ignore them. But methodologically, these judgements are not collected randomly--they must relate to and test hypotheses. Noam Chomsky is an invited speaker at Olinco in June, and at the same time the most influential linguist of all time. Even though the impact and implications of his ideas are widely discussed and highly controversial, the fact is, most people remain uninterested in the very field he has most revolutionized, the study of grammar. Consequently, his writings on his basic research assumptions, his philosophy of mind, and his critiques of the social sciences are much better known than his actual work on English grammar. Given the frequently heard views that this work has been superseded, our students should at least be conversant in the nature of his analyses. How Chomsky's method has been applied to native speakers' judgements of English is the subject matter of this seminar.Requirements - two presentations, one written and one oral1. The oral presentation will be a 25 minute talk, either power point or a talk with a handout. These oral presentations will start at the second seminar meeting. Each talk will be followed by a 15 minute discussion. Students are encouraged to ?plant questions? in the audience. The level and quality of student participation in the discussion will contribute to the evaluation of the presentation.2. The written assignment will be to write up Chomsky?s hypothesis and argumentation as if it were the student?s own, as a self-contained research paper. Chomsky?s arguments can be clarified, expanded, or better justified in a good paper, but no significant data or point of argument can be left out. Weaknesses discovered in his arguments should be written up as hedging or sections on further research, explaining how certain considerations may weaken the force of the argument(s). A written assignment will be due May 31.
