1. Lexicon, vocabulary, dictionary: Introduction to the study of the English wordstock.2-3. Basic units in the description of the English vocabulary: word, word form, lexeme, lexical unit. The open choice principle and the idiom principle. Compositionality. Collocation, coligation. Studying collocations in a corpus.4. Approaches to the lexicon: semasiologic and onomasiologic. Types of dictionaries. Introduction into the structure of a dictionary entry.5. Descriptive and non-descriptive meaning, semiotic triangle. Linguistic labels in the dictionary. Denotation and connotation.6. Systematic analysis of descriptive meaning: lexical decomposition. Thesaurus, lexical hierarchies, semantic fields.7. Relations between meanings of words and sentences.
