Obsah
Content: this subject aims to introduce students to the history of Jewish Music from Biblical times through to the present.Brief description: the lectures will cover the historical and cultural background of Jewish music until 70 AD; music of the Diaspora; Ashkenzim and Sepahardic Music; music of the Holocaust; music post-Holocaust.Students should be prepared to undertake a 3 night excursion to Krakow with the Lecturer in charge, at their own expense. This will take place from Thursday, November 28th until December 1st, 2013. Details of the excursion will be given in the first lecture of the semester.
Získané způsobilosti
On completion of this subject students should have an understanding of the continuity of Jewish music in the past five thousand years. This will include a knowledge of music in the Bible, how music fits into worship in the synagogue, and the music of weddings. In addition, students will be able to distinguish music from the Ashkenazi and the Sephardi Jews and be able to discuss the musical genres of the past five hundred years. Where possible students will attend live performances of Jewish music.Skills: English language.

Requirements :(i) minimum attendance at 80% of lectures; (ii) a written test identifying musical examples; (iii) viva voce examination of prepared questions in English.
