Obsah

The course introduces various issues of sustainability and resilience such as energy production, resource depletion, food production, climate change and biodiversity loss. Further aspects that will be introduced and discussed are the economic, social and cultural dimensions and how they interact, as well as other definitions of sustainability and design principles such as cradle to cradle. For example, the current economic crisis of the United States and Europe is related to issues of energy production and Peak Oil. Some of the perspectives and worldviews introduced and discussed are based on research on value systems according to Shalom Schwarz (Common cause) and Clare Graves (Spiral dynamics), including their relation to what is referred to as consumerism and capitalism. Furthermore, the course will explore the psychological aspects of how we relate to each other and to nature, which strongly influence the discussion and outcome in these questions. Finally, the course will discuss solutions and ways of handling the global challenges we are facing.

The course seeks to provide a very broad understanding of issues of sustainability that will be useful regardless of participant?s area of interest. Emphasis is given to seeing the complex and big picture of the functioning of our civilization and our relationship to nature, something that will be of high relevance for the future leaders of the planet at any level.

Požadavky

The course has two assessment criteria: (1) an active approach to learning, i.e. contributing to the class in various ways (discussion, sharing of reflections/observations, small group work, questions, etc.); and (2) an oral contribution (e.g. a presentation). Each criterion represents half of the course grade.
