Obsah

Why do people follow political leaders? How is it possible to establish and obtain power? Are people born to become authoritarian leaders? Do people in politics act in a "rational" pursuit of self-interest or can their behaviour be altruistic? What is the prevalence of mental illness in politics? Political Psychology tries to answer these and other questions by developing multidisciplinary perspectives including psychology, philosophy and sociology. Political Psychology does much more than simply observing voting behaviour. For the field political psychology, individual biographies as well as historical understandings are important. In the first two sessions, students are familiarized with the main theoretical approaches to Political Psychology. Topics include influence, manipulation and information dissemination. Next to situational theories students will learn about the impact of personality on decision-making, especially the role of affect/emotion. Inter alia, students will get insights into the work of Prof. Otto Scharmer who has developed a profound perspective on leadership and decision-making in the context of the on-going global transformation.Several lectures explore cases in world history, including "good" and "bad" leaders, the psychology of terrorism and genocide, and the way in which political leaders and the population handle the current global financial crisis. At least two sessions will be devoted to watching and analysing documentaries on critical issues relating to Political Psychology (e.g. "Inside Job", "The Century of the Self" and/or "The McVeigh Tapes: Confession of an American Terrorist").

Získané způsobilosti

The course helps students enter the field of professional political psychologists. Emphasis is given to a solid theoretical foundation on Political Psychology combined with practical knowledge to appreciate the importance of psychology for understanding the interrelated changes in the economy, politics and culture. For example, students will understand how religious and ethnic identities contribute to state conflict, how people are affected by politics, and how the personalities of political leaders affect political decisions. In addition to subject matter competence, the course also improves general competences such as: (1) oral and written expression in English; (2) research skills and analytical abilities; (3) critical thinking and problem-solving ability; (4) presentation skills; and (5) information sourcing. Lectures and seminars will be combined in order to give students ample opportunities to actively participate in active learning in small group discussions, case studies, documentaries and simulations
