During the semester students will get an overview on the use of sport within the developing countries (especially in Africa, Asia and South America). Students will understand how sport on a non-competitive level can enhance economic and social development.The development cooperation through sport will be mentioned and various approaches and theories will be discussed. The seminars will be elaborated on the basis of readings assignments. Different stakeholders will be introduced. NGOs (non government organizations) working in the field of Sport for Development will be described. Various movies and documentaries will be used in order to enrich the lectures and seminars.Topics of the classes1/Introduction to the course, recommendations, requirements and division of the tasks, motivation, discussion2/Introduction to the theory of development cooperation, sport and development, history. Explanation of different terms - GDP, development, slum, gender and others.3/Sport + and + sport organizations, stakeholders4/Sport and development cooperation, different donors (concrete examples).5/Movie - Football under cover6/Sport and handicap. Sport and gender equity.7/European dimension of sport and development.8/Sport and peer education. Role of young people in sport and development process9/Sport as a tool against discrimination and racism (concrete examples).10/Influence of big sporting mega-events (World Cup, Olympics) - concrete examples of Beijing, Sao Paolo and South Africa11/Different case studies - Opportunities, limitations, questions12/Practical exercises with focus on the use of sport in HIV/AIDS awareness raising13/Closing class: discussion, evaluation
