During the PhD exam, a review knowledge of classical and modern physics is required. Increased attention is layed on the fields of optics and optoelectronics including wave and photon optics, electromagnetic optics, quantum and statistical optics and theory of solid state physics. Beyond the theoretical background, knowledge of basic experimental methods and applications is required. The PhD exam is organized as a scientific discussion in which problems related to the subject of PhD thesis are discussed in detail. The skill of the candidate to apply basic knowledge of optics to modern fields such as light detection, information transfer and processing and quantum communication is also verified.
