Výuka bude probíhat od 7. 4. 2015 do 10. 4. 2015 denně od 12:45 do 16:00 v místnosti NB350, s výjimkou 10. 4. 2015, kdy výuka bude od 12:45 do 19:30. 1. Is Geography Destiny in Russia? (Russia's historical geography, recurring geographic themes, empires and nations, steppe expansion, mapping cultural and political space, core/periphery, heartlands, borderlands, frontiers, theories of nationalism). 2. Russia’s “Modern” Wars to 1921 (the Crimean War, the Russo-Turkish War, the Russo-Japanese War, the causes and effects of WWI and Revolution, the “Russian Civil War” and nationalities issues). 3. Ethnoschematization: Ideology, Practices, Fantasies (Stages of ethnoschematization in the pre-1830s: early modern heterogeneity in the Vienna Congress (1814-5) system of empires; 1830s-1860s: romantic nationalism and positivism; emergence of geographical societies; high era of ethnographic mapping in C/E Europe; 1870s-1910s: academic professionalization of geography; age of mass politics; population politics; 1920s: New Economic Policy and Soviet “affirmative action”; Lenin’s disavowal of Great Russian “privilege”; 1930s-1980s: Stalinist state surveillance and patrol of borders, Soviet Russocentrism; 1980s-present: color revolutions (we’ll take the Orange Revolution of 2004, Georgia in 2008, and the Euromaidan of 2013-4 as case studies). 4. “Totalitarianism” to “Integration” (World War I and postwar treaties, Nazi and Soviet legacies (we’ll briefly take the “totalitarianism” and “bloodlands” theses), NATO expansion since 1949, the revolutions of 1956 and 1968, the dissident movements, the Gorbachev years, the Solidarity movement, the Velvet Revolution).5. The Russia Question Reconsidered (the 1989 annus mirabilis after 25 Years, US-Soviet Geopolitics, EU enlargement in the 1990s-2000s, oligarchy vs. democracy, Euromaidan and the Russian-Ukrainian War (2013-present), 21st-Century Futures).

Po úspěšném absolvování budou studenti disponovat znalostmi rozšířenými o témata, která nejsou standardně přednášena, navážou kontakty s odborníkem mimo jejich domovskou instituci. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: - better understand the history of modern imperialism, warfare, and theories of nationalism;- critically interrogate the popular use and application of maps in Russia and East Central Europe (ECE), and of key terms such as core/periphery, heartlands, borderlands, and frontiers; - contextualize the historical record and designs of Russian/Soviet territorial expansion; - note the importance of states’ nationality policies and minority representation in the geography and cartography of Russia, the USSR, ECE and the world;- reconsider the significance of the Russia Question in the ECE contexts of globalization, NATO expansion, and EU integration, well into the 21st century.
