11. THE CZECH REPUBLIC – MY REGION
I live in Olomouc Region which is located in the north-west of the Czech Republic
it’s named after its capital Olomouc
it consists of 5 disctricts: Jeseník District, Olomouc District, Prostějov District, Šumperk District and Přerov District which is the one where I live
GEOGRAPHY
the northern part of the region is mountainous → the Jeseníky Mountains are located here
the southern part consists mainly of lowlands
the Morava river which flows through the region is the largest river in Moravia
other rivers are f.ex.: the Bečva River or the Odra River
SPORTS
the Olomouc half-marathon takes place every year in Olomouc
in winter is popular to go skiing to the Jeseníky Mountains f.ex. to Červenohorské sedlo or Kouty nad Desnou
PLACES OF INTEREST
OLOMOUC
Olomouc is a historical centre of Moravia
it’s famous for the Upper Square with the Holy Trinity Column and Olomouc Town Hall with astronomical clock
the Holy Trinity Column is a baroque monument and it’s on UNESCO World Heritage List
Olomouc is also a home of the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and Moravian Theatre Olomouc
SVATÝ KOPEČEK
is a place of pilgrimage
there is also a ZOO
PŘEDMOSTÍ
is the suburb of the town Přerov
about 27 000 years ago the hunters of mammoths settled in Předmostí
the common grave of mammoths hunters was discovered here and also some mammoths bones
BOUZOV CASTLE
is one of the most visited castles in the Czech Republic
the castle has been used in a number of films including Arabela f.ex.
HELFŠTÝN CASTLE – is a castle 15 kilometres east of Přerov
TEPLICE NAD BEČVOU – you can find there a small spa
