14. Education in GB, the USA and the Czech Republic

Education in the Czech Republic is compulsory from 6-15. Education system has 4 degrees: Pre-schools e., elementary schools, secondary schools and universities or colleges.

Pre-schools education are provided by kindergartens. Kindergartens are paid by parents.

Elementary and secondary education is free but parents have to pay only textbooks, basic equipment, meals or food in school cantina. Secondary education is provided by vocational school, secondary special school and grammar school. Education in vocation schools is for 3 years, students finished with certificate, they combine study and practice in factory, bakery, kitchen. Secondary special schools are for 4 years, students have to pass entrance exams, students finished school by school-leaving exam consists of Czech, Maths or foreign languages and some optional special subjects like economics, accounting and so one, students take a common part, leaving exam has several parts–oral and written. Grammar schools are for 4 or 8 years of study, student after maturita exam go to universities.

Education can be public and private.

At universities there are some levels. After 3 years you got the Bachelor degree and after 5 years you have Mater degree.

System of education in UK is complicated because each country has a separate school system.

English school system is divided into nursery (3–4), primary school (5–11), secondary school (11–17/18) and higher education.

Education is compulsory from 5 to 17. Schools classes are from Monday to Friday. School year starts in September and ends in June. The school year is divided into 3 terms. School day usually starts in 9 o’clock. There are public and private schools. In most private schools, students usually wear uniforms and parents have to pay fees for education.

Pre-schools education is provided in nursery schools and kindergartens.
Primary school is divided into infant and junior. Schools subjects are: Maths, English, foreign language (Spanish, German, French), Art, PE, Geography, History, …

At the age of 16 students take and have to pass GCSE exam (General Certificate of Secondary Education). You can continue at university. At universities you can get degree bachelor and master.

Britain has 47 universities. The most famous and the oldest one in Britain are Oxford and Cambridge. The date from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Schools in the USA can be private or public. 87 % of school aged children attend to state public school. They have compulsory education but the school age depends on the states. It can be from 5 to 8 to 16 to 18.

12 grades are compulsory. They have 3 levels: elementary, junior schools, highs school. Many schools have sport programmes f. e. basketball, baseball, football teams, cheerleaders, activities include also school newspaper, school government, musical groups.
