(noun) the field of medicine concentrated on pregnancy,
childbirth, and the postpartum period
amniotic fluid
(noun) a liquid protecting an embryo or foetus in the womb
miscarriage
(noun) the natural death of an embryo or fetus in the womb
abortion
(noun) the medical process of ending a pregnancy so that it
does not result in the birth of a baby
contractions
(noun) the motion of the uterus pushing your baby down the
birth canal and out into the world
dilated
(adjective) related to opening of the cervix, the entrance to
the uterus, e.g. during childbirth
rupture
(noun) tearing of the bag of membranes full of amniotic
fluid, also called "breaking the water"
waters
(noun) amniotic fluid
birth plan
(noun) a document that tells your medical team your
preferences during labour
presentation
(noun) the position of the baby in the uterus, referring to the
anatomical part of the fetus which is closest to the pelvic
inlet of the birth canal; there are three types: a cephalic,
breech, and shoulder presentation
breech
(noun) the wrong position of the baby in the uterus in which
the baby exits the pelvis with the buttocks or feet first as
opposed to the normal head-first presentation
Caesarean
(noun) a surgical procedure in which one or more incisions
are made through a mother's abdomen (laparotomy) and
uterus (hysterotomy) to deliver the baby

(verb) to give (a pregnant woman) special medicine in order
to make her give birth

(noun) a childbirth, referring to the whole process of the
body getting the baby in position to be born and pushing the
baby out
