In London, there are also several important squares. For example Trafalgar Square with a memorial of admiral Nelson, who won the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The memorial also called the Nelson’s column is surrounded by fountains and four giant bronze statues of lions, which are popular to take a picture on. On the square there is located the National Gallery, too.

Other famous squares are Leicester Square with lots of cinemas or Piccadilly Circus, which is also an important traffic junction in the centre of London. Piccadilly Circus is known mainly for the neon banners and for the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain with the statue of Eros.

Popular tourist attraction is also the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. It’s the place where the Prime Meridian of the world crosses London and it divides the Earth into the eastern and western hemisphere.

One of the most favourite modern sights is the Madame Tussaud’s museum of wax figures. You can see many important characters there, such as the famous actors, singers, sport stars, politicians and other well-known people.

Another famous modern attraction is the London Eye, one of the highest ferris wheels in the world. It was built in 1999, that’s why it’s also called the Millenium Wheel. It is 115 m high, has 32 cabins for the passengers and turns once in 30 minutes.

One of the city’s districts, the West End has a huge number of shops. It contains Europe’s busiest shopping street, Oxford Street, where you can buy anything you can imagine, and also one of the world’s most famous department stores, Harrod‘s.

There are also more than a hundred parks in London, including two very large ones, Hyde Park and Regent’s Park in the middle of the city.

In 2012, London is going to host the Olympic Games for the third time. No other city has hosted the event more than twice.

Some of the famous landmarks outside the London are for example Stonehenge, which is a complex of menhirs on Salisbury Plains in south England. Stonehenge was built around 2,000 BC and it served probably as a observatory or religious place.

Other famous places are the University of Oxford, which is the oldest university in the UK or Cambridge University, the second oldest university in the UK.

In Cantebury, there is the centre of the Church of England.

Some of the popular Romans landmarks are the city of Bath, with spas in south-west England or Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, which was built as a protection against the Scottish tribes from the north.

There are also several well-known and visited cities, such as Liverpool, industrial city where Beatles came from, Stratford upon Avon, where William Shakespeare was born and he’s also burried there or the largest Scottish city, Glasgow
