• JOHN STEINBECK (1902–1968)

He wrote about poor and working-class people. His most famous works include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden. Steinbeck was very sensitive to social injustice, poverty, and the difficult lives of ordinary people. His books are emotional and often share the struggles of people during hard times.

• HARPER LEE (1926–2016) – woman

Is best known for To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel about racial injustice in the American South. It is told through the eyes of a child, which makes the story very powerful and moving. The book is one of the most important novels in American literature because it deals with morality, childhood, racism, and justice.

• TONI MORRISON (1931–2019) – woman

Was a Nobel Prize-winning author who wrote about African-American identity, history, and memory. Her most famous novel is Beloved, but also Song of Solomon and The Bluest Eye are very important. Morrison's works are deep, emotional, and often connected with slavery, family, and the experience of Black Americans.

• JEROME DAVID SALINGER (1919–2010)

Is best known for The Catcher in the Rye. The novel is about a confused teenager, Holden Caulfield, who feels alienated from society. It became very popular because many young people identify with Holden's feelings of frustration, loneliness, and criticism of the adult world.

• RAY BRADBURY (1920–2012)

Is famous for science fiction, especially Fahrenheit 451. This novel is about a future society where books are burned and people are controlled by media and censorship. Bradbury's writing is important because it warns readers about the danger of ignorance and too much control.

• JACK KEROUAC (1922–1969)

Is one of the main writers of the Beat Generation. His most famous book is On the Road, which celebrates freedom, travel, rebellion, and a non-traditional lifestyle. His writing is very connected with the idea of personal freedom and spontaneity.

• JOHN GREEN (born 1977)

One of the current writers. He writes for young adults and is very popular today. His books include Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns, and The Fault in Our Stars. His works often focus on teenagers, friendship, love, identity, and illness. He is especially popular because his books feel very emotional and relatable to young readers.
