CUISINES

Cuisine is an important part of culture, and every country has its own eating habits and traditional dishes.

American cuisine

Is very diverse, because the United States is a multicultural country. Many people eat quick lunches, for example sandwiches or salads, and they usually have a bigger dinner in the evening. Typical American dishes include hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, pancakes, donuts, and apple pie. There are also very popular fast-food restaurants. Americans also celebrate important holidays with special food—for example, on Thanksgiving they eat roast turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

It's really popular to have a grill in a garden—people can see it as a „social status“ → the bigger grill you have, the higher you are.

British cuisine

Has a long tradition, even though it is sometimes considered simple or heavy. British people often have a quick lunch, but a big dinner in the evening. They are also famous for afternoon teas, biscuits or small cakes. Traditional British meals include fish and chips, shepherd's pie, roast beef with pudding, or the full English breakfast with eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, and toast. During Christmas, British families usually have roast turkey with vegetables and Christmas pudding.

Czech cuisine

Is known for being quite heavy and filling. Czechs usually have a warm lunch, as the biggest meal of the day, often starting with soup. Dinner is usually lighter. Traditional dishes include tenderloin (svíčková) / sirloin, goulash, schnitzel with potato salad or dumplings (knedlíky). Desserts such as cakes or buns are also very popular. At Christmas, Czech families eat fried carp with potato salad, and we bake a lot of Christmas cookies.

Canadian, Australian and New Zealand cuisine

Other english-speaking countries also have interesting cuisines. Canadian cuisine is influenced by American food, but it is known for dishes like poutine or desserts made with maple syrup. Australian and New Zealand cuisine often includes fresh seafood, grilled meat, and desserts such as pavlova. Both countries celebrate Christmas in summer, so many people have a barbecue instead of traditional winter meal.

Overall, cuisine shows how people live, what ingredients they have, and what traditions they follow. Holiday meals, for example Christmas dishes, are especially interesting, because every country celebrates them in a different way.
