STRUCTURE OF THE EU

  • The EU is a political, as well as an economic organisation.

  • The major bodies of EU are the European Commission, Council of the EU, European Parliament, European Court of Justice, European Central Bank, etc.

a) the European Commission

  • It is the highest executive body in the EU.

  • It proposes policy and law to be discussed by the Council and carries out the Council’s decisions.

.

b) the Council of the EU

  • It represents the national governments.

  • It is the decision-making body of the EU, the most important and powerful EU body.

  • The EU member states take it in turns to hold the Council Presidency for a six-month period.

  • Every Council meeting is attended by one minister from each EU country. Which ministers attend a meeting depends on which topic is on the agenda: foreign affairs, agriculture, industry, transport, the environment, etc.

  • It also shares responsibility for adopting the EU budget.

  • It also concludes international agreements that have been negotiated by the Commission.

c) the European Parliament

  • It is the body that represents the EU’s citizens, made by 785 members who are directly elected by the citizens of the EU for five years.

d) the European Court of Justice

  • Its role is to control if the EU law is interpreted and applied correctly.

  • Its seat is in Luxembourg.

e) the European Central Bank

The EU and the Czech Republic

  • The Czech Republic entered the EU in 2004 to share its goals of democracy, freedom and prosperity.

  • As citizens of the EU we have a right to travel, stay or work in any of the member states. Although some countries placed restrictions on this right, the period for which we still need a work permit cannot exceed a maximum of seven years.

  • Czech became an official language of the EU. All the official EU documents are therefore translated into Czech.

  • When we get to trouble in a foreign county, we can ask for help at any diplomatic or consular representation of any EU member state. We don’t need any international driving licence in the EU member states.

  • Czech students can study at the European universities, not only for several terms, but for whole studies. The only condition is the perfect knowledge of the local language and good results at the secondary school.

  • The Czech Republic remained a sovereign democratic state with its president, parliament, government and constitution.
