of those, from the "Black
Death" in the Middle Ages,
Spanish Flu in the 20th
century to HIV, SARS and
most recently Bird Flu.
None of the diseases that
have occurred in the 21st
century have became a
real threat to the whole of
humanity.
This issue is maybe more serious
than we think - it mustn't
necessarily be a completely new
virus or bacteria that could
endanger us. Every existing
disease can evolve into a new
type of disease that could easily
beat our immunity and spread
throughout the whole population.
The latest potentially very
dangerous disease is the ebola
virus. From late 2013 until now, it
has killed more than 10 000
people, primarily in West Africa
where it began and started to
spread to neighbouring countries.
Also Europe and the USA started
to be threatened, but now it
seems to be under control.
Even though this risk is huge, we
make it less and less likely by
developing our medical system.
Also scientists do a lot of
positive work against this threat.
Nuclear power as a
source of energy is
strongly criticized
by many ecological
groups like
Greenpeace
because of the
potential danger.
It's one of the
cleanest and
cheapest sources of
energy, but at the
same time the
accidents could
have global impact.
Viruses can also be developed
and spread artificially by
terrorist groups, but fortunately,
there hasn't been any case of a
massively successful biological
attack like this yet.
In the Czech
Republic we have
two nuclear
power plants,
"Temelín" and
"Dukovany".
There are
constant protests
against Temelín
power plant
mostly led by
Austrians, but
