A novel is a long prose and it has 

a dominant position amongst 

literary forms. The modern 

version of the novel emerged 

during the 18th century.

Even though there is no definition 

of how long a novella should be, it 

has been said, that "a novella is 

too short to be a novel as well as 

too long to be a short story". 

Either way, we can classify a 

novella as being somewhere 

between a novel and a short story.

There are many popular novels, but 

only few of them are known to 

almost everyone in the world. 

Speaking about so famous works, 

we can name "Don Quixote" by 

Miguel de Cervantes, "The Three 

Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas or 

"The Hobbit" by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Homer was an ancient Greek author. In 

fact, it has not been proved that he ever 

really existed. Despite this doubt, the work 

that is believed to have been written by 

him (for example epic poems "Illiad" and 

"Odyssey"), are some of the most 

influential pieces of literature in the 

history. 

Novella as a form of prose is also 

represented by plenty of great 

works, even by Czech authors. For 

example, the novella titled "The 

Grandma" by Božena Němcová is a 

masterpiece of Czech literature. 

We can also mention some Czech novels. Franz Kafka's "The 

Trial" and Karel Čapek's "The War with the Salamanders" are 

both well known even outside of the Czech republic.
