  • Was founded by Romans – Londinium

  • 1066 William the Conqueror arrived

  • Edward the Confessor built his palace in Westminster and established Westminster Abbey

  • 1599 – Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was opened

  • After 2WW was destroyed – today the face of London is changed

Great Fire 1666

  • ended the plague, but it also destroyed much of the city

  • Although people returned to live in the rebuilt city after the plague and the Great Fire, there were never again so many Londoners living in the city centre.

The Houses of Parliament

  • are in gothic style but were built after the old building had burnt down. The only part, which escaped the fire, was Westminster Hall. There is also a famous clock-tower with Big Ben.
