MASS MEDIA

Mass media means all the ways we share information with a large number of people. It includes television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the internet. Mass media plays an important role in modern society. It informs us about what is happening in the world, entertains us, and helps people communicate. It can also influence public opinion and show important social problems.

Types of Media

There are two main types of media: traditional media and digital media.

Traditional media includes newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. These were the main sources of information in the past. They are often seen as more reliable and controlled, because journalists check the information carefully.

Digital media includes the internet and online news. Today, people can get information very quickly and often for free. We can read news anytime and anywhere. However, digital media also has some disadvantages. Information is not always checked, so it can include fake news or misinformation.

Media in the Past and Today

In the past, people got news mainly from radio, newspapers, and TV. Editors decided what information people would see. This means there were "gatekeepers" who controlled the news. For example, in former Czechoslovakia before the Velvet Revolution, media was controlled by the state and people could not fully trust it. There were only a few TV channels and newspapers.

Today, thanks to the internet, we have much more freedom. We can choose what we read and watch.

On the other hand, there is so much information that is sometimes difficult to know what is true.

Functions of Media

  • To inform people about current events

  • To educate

  • To entertain

  • To control power, for example governments and big companies

Media should be honest, objective, and responsible. Journalists should check facts and not spread lies or panic.

DISADVANTAGES:
