Today visitors to the statue can use a glass lift to the top of the pedestal where they can see the inner structure of the statue above them. From that point there are 171 steps to a viewing gallery in the crown. OR if you are sporty, you can go up 354 spiral stairs to get to the top of the statue and have a wonderful view of the city.

FREE TIME IN NEW YORK

Central Par It is an area in the middle of Manhattan (covers 6% of Manhattan)and New Yorkers use it for everything. From early in the morning for jogging, later in the day for rollerblading and cycling, flying kites on windy days and boating on the lake in the summer. New Yorkers come during their lunch breaks to play all sorts of ball games. Teachers bring their classes to visit the zoo. Basically, Central Park is a “beloved piece of green” in the centre of Manhattan where you can have a rest near a quiet pond or just sit on the grass and have a picnic with friends or spend time walking, jogging, rowing, roller-skating, cycling or, in the winter time, skating. It’s also possible to listen to music and poetry in outdoor concerts, watch some drama or visit a zoo or a castle – you are always free from the noise of the busy city. Central park is a wonderful place to spend time in the daytime, but it is dangerous to be there at night.

Radio City Music Hall – a famous music halls, legendary singers (e.g. Frank Sinatra) performed there. Another famous concert hall is Carneggie Hall.(e.g. Gott + Vondráčková performed there).

Times Square –named after the offices of the New York Times (newspapers),heart of city´s entertainment, place of New Yearš Eve celebrations

Madison Square Garden – a sports arena, home of the New York Rangers (ice-hockey team), a venue for pop and rock concerts

Flushing Meadows – U.S.Open (tennis tournament) takes place there

Eating out

Where to go if you are hungry? You can find food from every country in the world in many restaurants. But most New Yorkers prefer their American fast food restaurants and food stands which sell hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and, of course, Coke. Many tourists like to go to Chinatown for the best Chinese food and to Little Italy for the best Italian pasta, cappuccino and fresh pastries. Both these parts of Manhattan have their own special atmosphere. Chinatown is famous for its exotic architecture, theatres and shops.

Students and artists in New York City

New York is a fantastic city for artists, art lovers and students. More than 27.000 students attend classes at Columbia University which is one of the oldest and most famous universities in the USA.. Any art lover would enjoy visiting the Guggenheim Museum. It is a major gallery of modern painting. Or you can visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Transport in New York

Today, most people who travel to NYC arrive by plane. There are three airports, e.g. JFK airport. The quickest way to Manhattan is by express bus or subway. The subway is the American word for what the British call the Underground and Europeans call the Metro. The New York Subway trains run 24 hours a day. They have 469 stops and in many parts of the city the trains run above the ground. To pay the fare, people need a special coin called a token, which they have to put in a slot in a turnstile to enter the station. Some people prefer to go by bus. There are several thousands of blue-white buses which go across the whole city along 200 routes. The bus and subway fare costs $1.50. New York taxis are called Yellow Cabs. The cab drivers know their way around he city well, don’t cheat their customers and are usually friendly. The traffic is controlled by the men in blue uniforms with caps and silver badges. People call them cops and respect them.
