Social media is websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. For example Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. In working environment is very famous LinkedIn which is a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. The goal of the site is to allow registered members share their work experience such as CV for people they know and trust professionally and for potential employers. And Twitter is a free micro blogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts called tweets. Twitter members can broadcast tweets and follow other users' tweets.

Many companies are realising that social media is an opportunity which is very cheap in comparison with other type of public relations and don’t hurt your budget. Only cost you have are people you employ and computer. Most of people these days have social media accounts and know how to handle them, and so it’s a really good way of getting in contact with younger consumer especially.

Companies should use social media to communicate with a potential customer not to annoy them with many of useless advertisings. Big companies are putting their product or advertisings on social media in order to people get to know them. But sometimes consumers find it annoying, because everywhere is many of advertising and most of time it borders you, when you try to do your things on the internet. You want to play music on YouTube channel and there are at least one advertise on some product. However using social media to show or present your product, company or service is a very smart and good way in 21th century, because lots of people spend most of the day on their phone or notebook on the internet. And as people say bad commercial is also an commercial.

Small companies sometimes use for example Twitter to communicate to their customers. They have got some new product or they’ve decided to promote it with a special offer, so they send out a tweet, which people can get very quickly and easily.

Social strategy of companies using social media should include an element of listening to chat is already being said in the space. The competitive advantage lies in really understanding chat you know about the customer that no one else does.
