Most secondary school are comprehensive schools(střední škola), which offer a general education(obecné, běžné vzdělání). In some areas children are selected (zvolit) for grammar school (which is more academic).
Education in Britain is free and most children go to state schools. However(nicméně), some parents pay to send their children to independent schools.
In England and Wales some of them are called public school, although(ačkoli) they are not really public at all!Many of these are boarding schools(internátní škola), where children live and sleep during the term(semestr). The national curriculum(učební plán, učivo) is the group of subject that must be tought(vzdělaný) in school in England and Wales.
Exam in England, Wales and Northern Ireland pupils take GCSEs(maturitní vysvědčení) of the age of 16. At 18 they can take A levels usually in two or three subject or AS exams (which is half the conlent of A level).
Most courses last for three of four years. Student recieve grants (dostávají příspěvky) from the government to pay for courses and food, accomodation, etc. Some students also recieve boans, which they have to pay back when they start work.
